The project works to link small patches of remnant vegetation and nature reserves in the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor in Southwest Australia. Through planting species indigenous to the region the revegetation project encourages the reintroduction of endangered species and combats desertification in this biodiverse hotspot. The Yarra Yarra Corridor was once an area of vibrant woodlands. But since the arrival of Europeans in the early 1900s years ago, approximately 97% of the vegetation has been cleared for traditional farming practices. Now, due to problem soils and a drying climate, parts of the landscape are not suitable for traditional agriculture. The loss of habitat has also caused native species to be under threat. The project works to restore habitat and provide safe refuge for various flora and fauna. The project provides Biodiverse Reforestation Carbon Offsets, which are not with a standard, as the methodology is in line with Gold Standard Foundations’ Land Use and Forests (LUF) framework. They are, however, unaccredited. In order to claim carbon abatement using BRCOs to meet international standards, we retire an equivalent number of certified carbon credits from an international project. This will ensure that we are fulfilling claims of carbon or climate neutrality. In this way, we’re able to support Australian biodiverse reforestation and all other co-benefits this project brings, help plant more trees and shrubs, and meet abatement requirements.
The Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) is a United Nations-run carbon offset scheme that allows countries to fund greenhouse gas emissions-reducing projects in other countries. CDM offset credits are verified and certified by authorized third parties. The CDM is also meant to deliver sustainable development benefits to the host country. CDM projects generate emissions credits called Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), which are then bought and traded.
